Dr Mahesha Weerakoon

Dr Mahesha, an Australian-trained urologist deeply rooted in Queensland's vibrant landscape, began her medical journey at Melbourne's Monash University, graduating in 2006. Her internship and residency at the prestigious Austin Hospital in Melbourne laid the foundation for a career marked by surgical excellence.

Traversing Victoria and New South Wales, Dr Mahesha trained alongside the nation's leading surgeons. Completing a general and robotic fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, she now specialises in general and functional urology.

Beyond clinical duties, Dr Mahesha is a dedicated researcher, contributing significantly to urological advancements.
With previous joint appointments at Austin Health, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and Monash University, her work in the Cancer of the Prostate Translational Research in Victoria (CAPTIV) collaboration and co-authoring Movember’s global initiative for Active Surveillance in Prostate Cancer reflects her commitment to pioneering research. She was also the recipient of the esteemed British Journal of Urology International Global Prize in 2016 in recognition of the highest cited research article, which demonstrated a profound impact on clinical practice within the field of urology.

Currently a staff specialist in Urology at Sunshine Coast University Hospital since February 2021, Dr Mahesha is a permanent and integral member of the hospital staff. Her passion for advancing urology is evident in her collaborations with healthcare professionals, contributing to ground-breaking research, and mentoring the next generation through teaching and training.

Away from the medical realm, Dr Mahesha calls the Sunshine Coast home, residing with her family. On her days off, she finds solace in beach strolls, harmonizing the serenity of coastal life with her dynamic professional pursuits.
