Epididymal Cysts

Epididymal Cysts

What are Epididymal Cysts?

Epididymal cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop within the epididymis, a coiled tube located at the back of the testicle. These cysts are typically benign and can vary in size. While they are generally non-cancerous and do not pose a significant health threat, understanding their nature and potential impact is essential.

Common Characteristics

  • Fluid-Filled Structures: Epididymal cysts contain fluid and are often soft to the touch.
  • Painless: In most cases, these cysts are painless, although larger cysts may cause discomfort.
  • Location: Epididymal cysts are usually found in the upper part of the testicle, separate from the testicle itself.

Causes of Epididymal Cysts

The exact cause of epididymal cysts is not always clear. However, they are believed to develop due to the accumulation of fluid within the tubules of the epididymis.

Symptoms

  • Palpable Lump: The most common symptom is the presence of a palpable lump within the scrotum.
  • Discomfort: Larger cysts may cause a sensation of heaviness or discomfort.

Diagnosis

  • Physical Examination: A urologist can typically diagnose epididymal cysts through a physical examination of the scrotum.
  • Ultrasound: In some cases, an ultrasound may be performed to confirm the diagnosis and assess the characteristics of the cyst.

Treatment Options

Epididymal cysts are generally benign, and many individuals may not require treatment.

However, if the cyst causes significant discomfort, options may include:

  • Aspiration: Draining the fluid from the cyst using a fine needle may provide relief. The downside with aspiration is that they can re-occur.
  • Surgery: In rare cases where cysts are large or causing persistent discomfort, surgical removal may be considered.

Monitoring and Follow-up

Regular check-ups with a urologist are recommended to monitor the size and characteristics of the cyst. If there are any changes or concerns, further evaluation can be conducted promptly.
